Throughout history designers have always liked to design stuff that’s a bit different from the norm. And we should be so grateful for this, because without it the world would be a very dull place indeed. The attraction of a design that isn’t quite the same as everything else, and that doesn’t conform to a stereotypical idea, certainly catches the eye. You may like it, or you may not, but at least it stands out from the crowd, and chances are you’ll remember it too.
This is especially true when it comes to clothes. Not many designs are really truly brand spanking new, the vast majority is simply recycled and updated to suit. And who can blame any uber-trendy designer for doing that? They must get so bored with the thought that hemlines can only go up and then go down again, and vice versa – from floor length to barely-there pelmet length, with the odd in-between stop along the way.
That’s why every few years they go back to doing something that’s already been done. Some call this magpie approach of stealing old ideas ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’ but however they label it, it’s a great way to keep designs looking fresh.
One such clothing trend is to make dresses, skirts and tops that aren’t symmetrical. Or in other words, where the hemlines or necklines are wonky, or there’s one sleeve not two. These clothes are no longer the traditional balanced shape but are crooked instead. The technical term for this lopsided design is asymmetrical. And there’s lots of it about…
The famous French designer, Patrice Catanzaro, is no different when it comes to using this cockeyed asymmetrical dress look; it’s out-of-the-ordinary and fits perfectly with his sexy fetish style. He plays with the expected shape of some clothes and creates really unique and beautiful pieces that you’ll really love playing around in! Vive la différence!
